Lubbock Christian University director of athletics Paul Hise announced the hiring of Paul Gilbert as the head coach of the men's soccer program.

Gilbert arrives in Lubbock following two years as an assistant coach at the Big Ten level. He was the volunteer assistant coach for Michigan State University's men's and women's soccer programs, specializing in the goalkeeper training. Gilbert also assisted in the daily operations of the soccer office, focusing on travel coordination, practice and training plans and on-campus recruiting.

"We are excited to welcome Paul Gilbert to the LCU family," said Hise. "After only knowing him for a short time it's easy to see his leadership abilities, passion for soccer and a commitment to helping his student-athletes develop in all areas of their lives. There's no doubt that he will put his own stamp on the LCU men's soccer program in the coming years.  The entire LCU staff is prepared to support him as he builds his program. We are also excited to welcome his fiancée Erinn as she will be moving to Lubbock soon."

This past season, Gilbert worked with both MSU soccer programs and also helped the staff with preparations for summer camps at MSU. The men's program completed a NCAA Tournament appearance in 2014 with a 12-5-6 record and finished the 2015 season with an 8-9-2 mark.  The Spartans led the Big Ten with 19 Academic All-Big Ten Selections this season.  The women's program went 8-6-4 last season and Gilbert helped train goalkeeper Gabrielle Gauruder, who was leading the Big Ten in conference save percentage.

"First off, I would like to thank President Tim Perrin, Paul Hise, associate athletic director Scott Larson and the rest of the search committee for this amazing opportunity," said Gilbert. "I am thrilled to be the next head men's soccer coach at Lubbock Christian University.  I believe that LCU is not only a special place to work, but also a special place for student-athletes."

Gilbert arrived at Michigan State after serving as an assistant coach at Adrian College during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. While at Adrian College, Gilbert coached two All-Conference goalkeepers and one All-Region player, including Niko Giantsopoulos who finished in the top-15 NCAA Division III ranking in save percentage (.867) and total saves (143). In addition, he interned as a staff coach of the goalkeepers at the Darlington School Soccer Academy, coaching Stanford's Jane Campbell, who is a member of the U.S. Women's National Team.

"As a men's soccer program, we have all of the resources to be successful both on and off the soccer field," Gilbert continued. "We look forward to establishing ourselves as a positive force not only on the campus of LCU, but in the Lubbock community as well.  Finally, we are incredibly excited to be back on the training ground as we begin our spring season when students return from winter break in January."

Gilbert is the fourth head coach in Chaps program history. He steps in for Lee Williams, who stepped down after two seasons at the helm of the Chaps program. LCU went 8-7-2 last season, closing the year 4-1-0 in their final five games.
